Tutorial 3.A. - View the main menu in the layout preview and apply Remote Control Navigation
Â
What you will learn in this section:
- How to view items in the Layout Preview using the check boxes in the Menu Elements tree
- How to apply remote control navigation settings to the buttons in your menus
Â
We will begin the menu authoring process with the Main Menu. Â The Main Menu is the menu element that displays when the viewer presses the Pop Up menu button on the Blu-ray remote control. Â
Â
It is easiest to work with menu elements when you display only the elements you need to see. Â DoStudio lets you turn the visibility of menu elements on and off by using the checkboxes next to each element in the Menu Elements Window.
Â
To display only your main menu:
- Be sure the Menu Elements window is displayed - if not, click the Menu Elements tab (next to the Playlist tab).
- Display the Layout preview window by clicking the Layout Preview tab. Â This displays a scaled view of all of your menu elements.
- Click the checkboxes next to the Chapters submenu, Bonus submenu and setup submenu. Â The check in the check boxes will disappear and the menu elements will no longer be visible in the Layout Preview window. Â Only your main menu should remain visible.

You must add remote control navigation to the buttons in your menus so that your viewers can navigate your menus with the up-down-left-right arrows on their remote control. Â There are two ways of doing this (the slow, manual way and the fast way).
Â
To add remote control navigation to your Main Menu buttons manually:
- In the Main Menu, click the MM Play Film button in the Menu Elements list to display the button’s properties in the Control Panel.
- Click the remote Control tab - you will see pull-down lists for the four arrows of the remote control.
- Use the pull-down list for the Right arrow button to select the button called MM Chapters. Â This will cause the MM Chapters button to become selected when the viewer presses the right arrow button.
- Use the pull-down list for the Left arrow button to select the button called MM Setup. Â This will cause the MM Setup button to become selected when the viewer presses the left arrow button.

You can continue this process for each button in all of your menus. Â This can get rather tedious so this is a more efficient way…
Â
To add remote control navigation to all of the buttons in your Main Menu set automatically:
- Right-click on the Set called “Main Menu Set” and select “Apply Horizontal Navigation” from the context menu. Â This automatically apply remote control navigation to the left and right arrow buttons for each.
- Click the MM chapters button in the Menu Elements list to display the button’s properties in the Control Panel and click the remote Control tab. Â You will see that the remote control navigation has been automatically added. Â You can select the MM Bonus and MM setup buttons to confirm that the remote control settings have been added to them too.

The “Apply Vertical Navigation” feature applies remote control settings to the Up and Down remote control navigation settings for each button in a set. We will use that feature in later tutorials.
Obviously you will use the Apply Horizontal/vertical navigation feature in most cases because it is much faster than adding the settings to each button manually. Â It is important to know how to do the manual process, however, because there are times when you will want to edit those settings for an individual button.
