Tutorial 9.C. – Add 4 conditions to set subtitle tracks on the Main Video Playlist

What you learn in this section:

  • How to use the Set Subtitle Track action
  • How to use the Turn Subtitle Track On action

  1. Display the Playlist tree by clicking the Playlist tab.
  2. Right-click on the Start Event for the Playlist called “Main Video” (recall that in Tutorial #1 we added three subtitle tracks to the Main Video Segment). Select “Add Condition” from the context menu.
  3. Click the New Condition that appears under the Start event to display its properties in the Control Panel.
  4. Name the condition “If English Subtitle” using the Name text box in the Control Panel.
  5. Click the “Statement” tab.
  6. Select the “Subtitle” APRM using the “Field” drop down list.
  7. Select “=” (equals) in the “Operator” drop down list. (This is selected by default).
  8. Type “English” in the “Value” text box.
  9. Click “Save” to save the statement.
  10. Click the Actions tab.
  11. Right-click in the Actions window to display the Actions list. Select Subtitle Actions > Set Subtitle Track.

The Set Subtitle Track Action has three parameters.

  1. Select Main Video from the Playlist Name pull down list and select Main Video from the Segment pull down list.
  2. Select “English Subtitle” from the Subtitle field.

There is one more action that you need to add to turn subtitles on.

  1. Right-click in the Actions window to display the Actions list. Select Subtitle Actions > Turn Subtitles On. (There are no parameters to set for this Action).

Now when the Main Video Playlist plays, the disc will check the condition to see if the “Subtitle” value is “English”. If it is “English” then the English subtitle track will be set as the active subtitle track, the subtitles will be turned on (ie. made visible) and the Playlist will play. The viewer will see the English subtitles.

We need to add two more conditions to the start event for the “Main Video” title: one for French and one for German.

  1. Repeat steps 2-12 to add a 2nd condition to the Main Video Playlist start event. Name this Condition “If French Subtitle”.
  2. Select “French Subtitle” from the Subtitle field.
  3. Repeat steps 2-12 to add a 3rd condition to the Main Video Playlist start event. Name this Condition “If German Subtitle”.
  4. Select “German subtitle” from the subtitle field.

We need to add one more condition to handle the “Off” setting for the subtitles.

  1. Add another condition by right-clicking on the Start Event for the playlist called “Main Video”. Select “Add Condition” from the context menu.
  2. Click the New Condition that appears under the Start event to display its properties in the Control Panel.
  3. Name the condition “If Off” using the Name text box in the Control Panel.
  4. Click the “Statement” tab.
  5. Select the “Subtitle” APRM using the “Field” drop down list.
  6. Select “=” (equals) in the “Operator” drop down list.
  7. Type “Off” in the “Value” text box.
  8. Click “Save” to save the statement.
  9. Click the Actions tab.
  10. Right-click in the Actions window to display the Actions list. Select Subtitle Actions > Turn Subtitles Off.

Quick Compile and review.

Try selecting “French” from the subtitle setup menu and then click “Play film” on the Main Menu. You will see that the French subtitle track is now visible.
