NetBlender Nominated for Advanced Media Technology Emmy
Nomination represents the first industry-wide recognition of breakthrough technology that “blends” DVD and real-time Internet media
Alexandria, VA – When someone says “Web 2.0” it’s unlikely that “PBS historical documentary” is the next thing that comes to mind. But finding creative ways to blend seemingly disparate type of media is the specialty of NetBlender, Inc., a new media startup that creates software for the seamless blending of DVDs and real-time Internet media.
NetBlender was honored last week with a nomination by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in its Science, Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards for Broadband and Personal Television categories. The nomination is for the company’s work on the DVD of the Emmy-winning PBS Documentary, The Cultivated Life: Thomas Jefferson and Wine.
The nominated production uses NetBlender DVD enhancement software to blend Web 2.0 functionality with the video content on the disc. Features include iTunes synchronization and interaction with Microsoft’s Virtual Earth map.
Demonstrating first-of-kind integration of online mapping with DVD-Video, the production allows the viewer to watch the portion of the film that retraces Jefferson’s 1787 wine tour through France’s great wine regions, while an online map of France is displayed simultaneously. As the film moves from region to region, the corresponding view of the map changes in synchronicity. Additionally, the viewer can take control and manipulate the map view, by clicking on any of Jefferson’s tour stops which are marked with pushpins. When a pushpin is clicked the application cues the corresponding portion of the film from the DVD.
“This is a truly dynamic time for television industry, and we are recognizing the significant contributions made by technology and engineering professionals in enhancing and redefining the consumers’ experiences with the media,” said Peter Price, President/CEO, National Television Academy.
Other nominees include CNN Enhanced (CNN/Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.), Fantasy Football Tracker (BIAP Systems, Inc.), Passions Vendetta (NBC.com), Sopranos: Crime. Organized (Deep Focus) and The-N.com Video Mixer (The N).
“This nomination represents significant industry validation for our products,” said John Harrington, CEO of NetBlender, “and we are pleased to be recognized with such an impressive array of producers. The Cultivated Life DVD is a great example of our mission to create an enriching viewer experience by extending the value of the DVD format.”
NetBlender was nominated in the category of Outstanding Achievement in Advanced Media Technology for the Non-Synchronous Enhancement of Original Television Content. The 58th Annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards will be presented at the opening evening event of the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) on Monday, January 8, 2007.
